Bed bug infestations have become something of an epidemic over the last couple of years. It seems that each week you hear about a new area that has had problems with these vicious little creatures, so it is no wonder that most people find themselves wondering if their home has also become a breeding ground of bed bugs. Many of you are probably asking the question, How do you know if you have bed bugs?

While most people don’t like the idea of some bug running around their bed while they sleep the real concern for most people is whether or not these small creatures bite. They do, and these bites can become infected and cause a variety of health problems. Worst of all, since bedbug bites don’t appear immediately, it is possible to receive dozens of bites before you even realize you have been bitten.

What Do big Bug Bites Look like?
If you have bug bites and not sure if they are from bed bugs or some other insect, then knowing what bed bug bites look like can help you identify these bites. Unlike flea bites that normally occur on the feet and ankles, bed bug bites can occur anywhere on the body and usually appear in a line of three which are known as the breakfast, lunch, and dinner order.
People who highly allergic to these bites may see swelling and redness within a few hours of having been bitten while others won’t see any signs of the bites for several days. In some cases it may take as long as 9 days for bites to begin appearing.
Bed bug bites can be itchy and scratching them to lead to infections, so you want to treat these bites to help prevent scratching them. A paste made of water and baking soda will help relieve the itch as will several over the counter medications. For severe bed bug bites you will need to seek medical treatments.

What to Do to Get Ride Bed Bugs
Once you have determined that you have bed bugs you will need to exterminate them as soon as possible as bed bugs reproduce rapidly, and a small infestation can rapidly grow to nightmare proportions. Unfortunately, since these insects hide in every small crevice in your home, getting rid of them is not easy and it may take several attempts and more than one procedure to rid yourself of the problem once and for all.
- The first thing you are going to want to remember is that you don’t want to start moving furniture to other rooms in your home, as you will only make the problem worse. Keep all furniture in the infested room, to help keep the problem isolated while you are treating the problem. You will want to place all the clothing, stuffed animals, and bedding from the room into plastic bags and seal those bags tightly. Once those clothes are gathered up and sealed you can then place them in the back seat of your car in the sun. (if it is summer and you have hot temperatures) or immediately wash the clothes and dry them in a hot dryer for a couple of hours.
- You then need to dispose of any papers or books that are in the room as bed bugs can hide in such things and it is better to be safe than sorry.
- You will then want to pull your bed apart removing the mattress and box springs and vacumn everything in your room including the bed, the headboard, the walls, the furniture, and the floor well. Immediately take the vacuum outside to dispose of the bag.
- If possible steam cleans everything with a steam cleaner making sure you don’t miss any cracks or crevices.
- Once you have finished steam cleaning treat your box springs and mattress with a product meant to kill bed bugs that is safe for humans and any pets in your home.
- Cover your mattress and box springs with a plastic cover. While this cover may not keep new bedbugs from getting onto your bed it will keep any missed bugs from getting to you and biting.
- If your bed has legs, using a bedbug interceptor will help you to determine if you have solved the problem or if you need to retreat to the area again. Best of all, these interceptors will tell you where the bedbugs are coming from. Bed bugs trying to get off the bed are will be found in one area of the receptor, and bedbugs trying to get on the bed will be trapped in another area of the interceptor, which will determine where you need to concentrate your next round of treatment.
You do need to remember, however, that many of the chemical sprays and concentrates used to kill bedbugs may be hazardous to your health and those of your pets so make sure that you only use organic sprays and treatments when treating that infestation.
